Omikuji Fortune Wheel

Omikuji are the paper fortunes drawn at Japanese shrines and temples, above all on the first visit of the New Year. This wheel brings the draw online: spin it and it lands on one of eight fortunes, from great luck (daikichi) to bad luck (kyō). It is a game — for a New Year party, a stream, or to start the year with a smile.

Click the wheel to try it — nothing is saved until you use it.

How to draw your fortune

Make a wish or think of the year ahead, then click the wheel. Each fortune is one slice of the same size, and the result comes from your browser’s cryptographic random source. Take turns and give everyone at the table a fortune.

The eight fortunes

The wheel holds fortunes found at Japanese shrines and temples: great luck, middle luck, small luck, good luck, half luck, future luck, small future luck and bad luck. Their ranking varies from one shrine to another. Copy the wheel to add great bad luck (daikyō), or to write a short message on each fortune.

Questions about this wheel

What do the omikuji fortunes mean?

Great luck (daikichi) is the best result and bad luck (kyō) the worst. Middle, small and plain good luck are all good fortunes, while future luck means things will improve later.

Is the online omikuji random?

Yes. Every fortune has the same chance and the spin uses a cryptographic random source. It is a game, not a shrine service.

Can I change the chances?

Yes. Copy the wheel and add a fortune more than once: written twice, it is twice as likely to come up.
